Fascinating and monumental antique sculpture depicting a winged flying putto or cherub, a splendid example of sacred and ecclesiastical sculpture from the Baroque period (17th-18th century).
Carved entirely by hand from solid wood, the work is distinguished by the extraordinary dynamism imparted by the "S" torsion of the body and the flowing drapery, originally conceived for a perspective view from below, typical of altars or period pediments.
The putto's face expresses the typical theatrical grace of the 18th century, with full cheeks, parted lips, and an intensely expressive gaze.
The work retains an extraordinary historical patina:
  • Complexion: Created with a delicate polychrome lacquer in egg tempera or glue on a gesso ground, which has remained matte and authentic.
  • Gilding: The drapery around the hips and the rear wings are decorated in pure gold leaf applied with mission/water gilding over Armenian bole, the typical reddish clay visible in areas of natural wear on the back.
  • Back: The back is intentionally left flat, as was the custom for sculptures intended to be mounted against walls.

Period: Late 17th - mid-18th century

Origin: Central European area.

Condition:
Excellent general state of conservation for a wooden artifact of this age. It shows noble and elegant signs of aging that certify its authenticity: a widespread and charming craquelé on the polychrome complexion, small losses of gesso/paint on the hair, and a natural structural fissure (period joint line) surrounding the right shoulder and arm, which is structurally stable.
No invasive restoration or modern repainting.

A piece of sacred art with great theatrical impact, perfect for enriching a private collection, for display as a wall sculpture in a representative living room, or for inclusion in a high-end interior design project that combines the antique with the contemporary.
